1.What were the reasons behind launching your blog, The Adelaidian, together, as opposed to becoming influencers separately?
When we began the blog, we’d forged a pretty tight friendship in a very short amount of time and recognised we shared uncannily similar tastes, interests and career goals. Having met in our second year of university, it really was friendship at first sight (as corny and lame as that sounds haha). We came up with the idea of blogging together just 6 months on from meeting one another.
The blog has and always will be very equally shared between us; we share workload so effortlessly (bare in mind, we’ve been doing it this way for 4 years now!) that it has never even been a question as to whether or not we’d diverge on separate paths as influencers. We’ve always been excited to see where this project could take both our career paths and our friendship. So far, it’s been pretty damn amazing on both ends.
2.Are you both full-time blogger? If not, what is each of your occupations?
We both work full-time marketing positions along the side. Melissa works in Social Media Management and Digital Marketing for fashion start-ups and is currently working for a new brand based in Chelsea called Rich Fashion. Kristen works in the copywriting sector of a marketing agency called Adapt Worldwide, looking after various clients including Marks & Spencer
3. What were both of you doing before you launched your blog, and what was life like at the time you launched your blog?
Before beginning The Adelaidian, we were both studying at university and working part-time in hospitality/various other random writing roles. We were both super eager to break into the fashion media scene in our city, Adelaide (Australia), and had both been hustling for a little while. The Adelaidian was our big break – before we knew it, we were getting invited to all the exciting launches, runways and events between Adelaide, Sydney and Melbourne!
4. Why did you both decide to go into influencer marketing, and how has being an influencer changed both of your lives?
The social media and influencing scape has changed drastically in the time we started blogging. I mean, Instagram for business had not even been introduced at the time we started our Instagram blog! Can anyone even remember what Instagram used to look like in 2014? What kind of content was being produced? It certainly wasn’t at the calibre it is today!
Influencer marketing is something we fell into whilst following our dreams of working in the fashion journalism and marketing fields. And absolutely no regrets here; it’s been nothing but a total dream. We owe it so much… Instagram has changed our lives in a way we would never have imagined.
Some of the highlights have been being invited as guests to events such as Melbourne Fashion Week, Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival, London Fashion Week and collaborating as partners with Adelaide Fashion Festival. There’s something so special about the atmosphere of these glamorous events and, of course, the incredible fashion on the runways. We’ve also completed some amazing travels – one time we were even invited to go shark-diving, which was a totally thrilling and unique experience!
It’s all glitz and glam, but there’s obviously loads of work to it. We love and thrive off of that balance – the balance between work hard play hard – so it’s really been a win-win for us. Here’s to many more blogging adventures to come!
